To be selfish or not?


Selfish means concerned chiefly about one’s own self. Selfish is always used in negative connotation. He is extremely selfish and does not care for anyone else. 

We talk as if being selfish is crime. However, we forget that one of the key pillars of the capitalist economy is the invisible hand theory.

“Every individual... neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it... he intends only his own security; and by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, he intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention.” - The Wealth Of Nations, Adam Smith

When we are a part of the capitalist economy, we are making a mistake if we are acting selflessly.  It is not from the benevolence of a company that we expect our salary, but from their regard for their own interest. In a job interview, we shall never talk about our necessities but of their advantages of hiring us.  

Give yourself the freedom to be selfish and your actions will promote an socially favorable end which was no part of your intention.
